 Description
In the backwash of the tide where it thinned to foam on the pebbly shore, a man's head was singing. Seaweed tangled in its dark hair, green and brown bladderwrack that might have rooted there tide-tossed years ago; Cairo glimpsed a flash of white under the silted water, thought coral, bent closer and saw bone. There was no blood. The neck had been uprooted from the shoulders, flesh torn, vertebrae snapped, but that was long ago and the sea had washed it clean since then. If the head's eyes were shut against the salt, its mouth opened and closed without rest: singing a language she did not know, words she did not understand, that tightened the skin around her eyes and burned in the back of her throat until she clenched her fingernails into her palms to keep from crying. "Stop," Cairo said to the head rolling in the chill, restless waves. "Stop."

Sonya Taaffe's first published story.
