2 OCTOBER 2006 -- Prime Books is pleased to announce that its 2006 release In the Palace of Repose, the debut short story collection by Holly Phillips, has won this year's Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic.

The Sunburst is an annual juried prize awarded for excellence of writing in a speculative fiction novel or book-length collection by a Canadian author. The other shortlisted finalists this year were three novels -- Cory Doctorow's Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town, Robert Charles Wilson's Spin, and Alison MacLeod's The Wave Theory of Angels -- and another collection, James Alan Gardner's Gravity Wells.

"I'm very happy and pleased that recognition has been given to Holly and her collection," says Prime editor Sean Wallace. "Not only does it honor her incredible storytelling, but it's a welcome endorsement of the short story form by readers who enjoy them as much as we do."

"The stories of In the Palace of Repose spring to life from the page," writes the Sunburst jury. "As the characters uncover artefacts of an unimagined past, relive a long-forgotten murder, cope with a memory that suddenly wipes itself clean or struggle to adapt to startling new worlds, Holly Phillips's masterful writing, depth of characterization and complete control of her craft make this book a joy to read."

Holly Phillips lives near Trail, British Columbia. Her other works include the novel The Burning Girl, also published by Prime Books, and numerous short stories.

"The great thing about winning an award isn't exactly a sense of accomplishment or reward," Phillips says. "It's the sense that all the passion and care that I put into learning my craft has been met with an equal degree of interest in the readers and judges for the Sunburst Award. To be taken seriously, just as I take my writing seriously, is perhaps the highest compliment I could hope for."
